Our Program honors the Christian Believer, Dorcus from the Book of Acts.  She was a strong Christian Female Believer who was also an accomplished entrepreneur who established her own seamstress business.  Her success in business and strength of Faith enabled her to become a tremendous blessing to her community.

We’ve had great success with our House of Dorcas Training and Literacy Program in Pakistan. Our program provides vocational and literacy training to girls and young women as well as targeted literacy programs for children between the ages of 4-17 in the Punjab province.

Both phases of our House of Dorcas program promote evangelism and provides an opportunity to share the gospel through both word and deed. Our vocational training program for girls and young women provide the sewing skills necessary for them to open their own seamstress businesses. Our bilingual literacy program provides an education opportunity for many youngsters, especially those from a Christian household to not only gain literacy skills but to learn about Christ while doing so.

The work that we are doing is more important than ever. Programs, like our House of Dorcas Training and Literacy program, address the grim realities that women, girls and impoverished children face in their struggle to gain basic literacy skills. Astonishingly, only about 59% of the total Pakistani population is literate. What’s worse is that a closer look at that number reveals that women, especially women in the rural areas, suffer the most in this literacy travesty.

We have learned that the situation is even more dire as the literacy rates plummet when it comes to the Christian minority of Pakistan. Challenges for Christians in Pakistan are mind-blowing and have contributed to their decline in the country. In 1998, the Christian minority of Pakistan comprised about 1.6% of the total population. Today, that number has declined to about 1.3%. Depending upon the region, the Christian literacy rate in Pakistan ranges between 10-39%. The Christian women literacy rate is extremely low which is a devastating point for the future of Christianity in Pakistan.

The minority Christians of Pakistan face incredible challenges daily. Helping them become literate will not only strengthen their faith as they will be able to read The Word of God for themselves but can also propel them forward socioeconomically and perhaps grow the Christian population in the country.
